Prime Minister Narendra Modi is said to have taken a strong exception to the absence of some BJP lawmakers in the Rajya Sabha during the passage of the Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2021, on Monday.

Sources said that speaking at the BJP Parliamentary Party meeting, the Prime Minister asked Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi to submit details of members not present in the House during the voting for a statutory resolution, demanding that the Bill be sent to the select committee, moved by opposition MPs.

It was negated by a division vote with 44 MPs voting in favour and 79 against it. The BJP has 94 members in the Upper House. According to sources, the PM said he had repeatedly told MPs to be regular in Parliament. The party on Monday also issued a three-line whip to MPs to be present in the two Houses on August 10 and 11.

The BJP Parliamentary Party also gave a standing ovation to the sportspersons who returned from Tokyo after their exemplary performance at the Olympics. Sources said the PM asked party lawmakers to promote all sports, not just cricket. “Cricket anyway gets a lot of promotion but there are Olympic sports not getting adequate attention. MPs should ensure that there is provision for teaching games from the gram panchayat level,” he was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, briefing about the meeting, Joshi said, “It is a matter of pride that we got our biggest-ever tally of medals in the Olympics. A presentation was given to all MPs today. The PM asked the party MPs to encourage talent of sportspersons and ensure proper training for them in their respective constituencies.

“The PM also asked MPs to scout sporting talent among children by conducting competitions and inculcate sportsperson spirit and increase involvement in sporting activities.”

The Prime Minister also urged party lawmakers to take up the issue of eradicating malnutrition and ensure that social schemes like Poshan Abhiyaan and Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana are implemented in their respective constituencies.
