You owe explanation to no one,” said Indian cricket team’s chief coach Ravi Shastri as he lent his support to the multiple Olympic medallist American gymnast after she pulled out of the team and all-round individual events at the Tokyo Games citing mental health concerns. 24 new Games-related COVID-19 cases reported, IOC defends Olympics

Tokyo: The Tokyo Olympics organisers on Thursday announced 24 new COVID-19 cases, including three athletes, the highest one-day figures so far at the Games, even as the organisers insisted that the showpiece is not behind the record surge in the host city. The city logged in an all-time high of 3865 positive cases on Thursday. Three new deaths were recorded with 81 patients being described as “severe cases”. Reacting promptly, the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) spokesperson Mark Adams said the Games are not responsible for the surge in coronavirus infections in Tokyo, according to public broadcaster NHK. The live viewership of the Test played between June 18 and 23 had touched 130.6 million across 89 territories. India contributed most of the audience with Star Sports and national broadcaster Doordarshan accounting for a whopping 94.6 per cent consumption of the intensely contested match that saw New Zealand complete an eight-wicket win on the reserve day.
